Cognitive Load

The total amount of mental effort required to process information, evaluate options, and reach a decision. Cognitive load theory, developed by John Sweller, distinguishes between intrinsic load (complexity inherent to the problem), extraneous load (unnecessary complexity from poor information design), and germane load (effort spent building understanding).
